Nottingham’s original Castle was built for William the Conqueror in 1067, it remained one of the premier castles in England until the 16th century. Todays visitors can still see the passage. After the execution of Charles I, the castle was demolished by parliamentary order in 1651. In 1674-9 the Duke of Newcastle built a Ducal Palace on the Castle Rock, after fire damage in 1831 the building was restored in 1878 and transformed into a museum of fine art.
