Lemonroyd Marina : Local Info

Middleton Railway (5 miles)

Dating from 1758, the Middleton Railway stakes claim to being the oldest operational railway in the world. Originally brought into being to ferry coal between Leeds and Middleton, it’s been running ever since then. Today the railway majors in carrying tourists and enthusiasts, rather than coal. It was taken over by the voluntary Middleton Railway Trust in 1960, this being another first. Visiting makes a great day out with many special events put on which showcase the charming old steam locomotives. There are Santa runs, Thomas days and suchlike, in addition to features which include the ‘Engine House’, refreshments, shop and disabled access.

Pontefract Park Racecourse aims to cater for all race-goers across its four, fully appointed enclosures. The Picnic enclosure is the most popular with families featuring children’s rides in the evenings and on Sundays. The Silver enclosure adds to the provision of facilities and this increases through the Grandstand and Paddock enclosure to the most luxurious Premier enclosure. A significant programme of refurbishment and improvement has just recently been completed and the course now boasts modern amenities in all enclosures. Racing is televised to all bars and refreshment areas.

Thwaite Mills Water Mill (4 miles)

Thwaite Mills was owned by the Horn family for many generations. Now with a fully restored, fully functional watermill, Thwaite Mills not only tells their story, but also that of the mills themselves over their 200 year lifespan. The working mill is powered by a massive pair of waterwheels and these form a striking centrepiece to the site.

Wakefield Art Gallery (5 miles)

Sculptures by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore form the core of the collection at Wakefield Art Gallery, along with significant pieces by other prominent British artists. It’s fitting that locally born sculptors should play such a central role in the Gallery given its local feel, set, as it is, in a Victorian town house close to Wakefield town centre. There are also events, demonstrations and temporary exhibitions on offer here, with educational programmes and activities aimed at young and old alike.

Wakefield Museum (5 miles)

The work of local explorer Charles Waterton is recreated at the Wakefield Museum. His explorations through South America are described, the rainforest being brought to life with various sights and sounds which enhance the displays on hand. It was he who first conceived of, and subsequently created a Nature Reserve. This world first helped him preserve many rare species. There are interactive exhibits which allow you to explore ideas and concepts from as far back as Roman times right up to the modern day. Additionally, a digitised photo collection allows you to take prints away of favourite exhibits, or indeed of exhibits not currently on display.
