Goytre Wharf Local Information
Abergavenny Museum & Castle (4 miles)
The ancient market town of Abergavenny dates from prehistoric times. Located in an old hunting lodge in the grounds of Abergavenny Castle, the Abergavenny Museum traces that development from pre-history through the Romans, Normans and up to the present day. There are various exhibits and displays to enjoy. The Castle is also open to visitors. It’s of Norman build and saw conflict for more than three centuries as the wars raged over the Welsh border. The most infamous event of those times was when William de Braose instigated the massacre of Welsh chieftains.

Blaenavon Ironworks (4 miles)
Blaenavon Ironworks is regarded as one of the best preserved in Europe. As home to the 18th Century Ironworks, Blaenavon has a long history of iron and coal production. It wasn’t until the arrival of the steel industry that the area saw the boom times begin to tail off. The success of the iron and coal industries is reflected in the fact that at the time of building, Blaenavon Iron Works represented the very cutting edge of blast furnace technology. However, it’s not just the technological innovation that’s detailed here. The human element is also explored with insight into what it was like to be part of this industry.

Raglan Castle (6 miles)
Raglan Castle is the last of the wealth of Welsh fortifications built in the Middle Ages as part of the territorial struggles of the time. Despite echoes of cousins like Beaumaris and Caernarfon, Raglan dates from more peaceful times, its raison d’etre being more status than protection. That said, it has seen its fair share of conflict. Cromwell laid siege to it in the 17th Century Civil War. While he finally did take it, the siege proved to be one of the longest to have been undertaken. Despite Cromwell largely demolishing it, Raglan is still one of the most impressive Medieval castles.
