Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse (9 miles)
Set in superb countryside near the beautiful River Dee, Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse provides an excellent venue to enjoy Steeplechasing - one of Britain's most popular spectator sports. If you're new to racing you'll find Bangor-on-Dee an excellent place to sample the delights of a "day at the races" - if you contact the course, they'll even send you "Come Racing" their excellent newcomers guide to the sport. Racing is a superb family day out - and at Bangor-on-Dee racecourse, it's great value too because children go free! Whether you fancy a flutter, or just want to admire the magnificent horses and have a bite to eat in the cafe, you're bound to enjoy your day here.

Cholmondeley Castle Gardens (10 miles)
Probably one of the most romantic and beautiful gardens in England, Cholmondeley Castle Gardens are a popular attraction for visitors to Cheshire. The gardens have been carefully planned so there are lots plants in flower whatever the season. Highlights include the pretty rose garden and the temple garden where Koi carp can be seen in the lake. Visitors can cross to the islands by way of two bridges. The gardens have a picnic site, and afterwards, visitors can walk round the lake and enjoy the spectacular views of the castle surrounded by magnificent trees including two superb cedars of lebanon.

Erddig Hall, Gardens & Country Park (14 miles)
Visitors to Erddig Hall will get a fascinating glimpse into the life of a unique family home in the early part of the 20th Century. Your visit will start in the workshops of the estate blacksmith and joiner, and move on to the laundry, bakehouse and kitchen. Visitors can then see the main house and find out how servants lived below stairs. The Yorke family's rooms are above stairs with their fine collection of 18th century furniture. The walled garden at Erddig is also well worth visiting, with its fruit trees, pond, canal, and the National Ivy Collection.

Haughmond Abbey (12 miles)
This ruined Augustinian Abbey, dating from the 12 century AD, is situated at Upton Magna in Shropshire. As well as enjoying a walk around the beautiful and atmospheric ruins, visitors can enjoy the on-site exhibition which provides information about the Abbey's fascinating history. The exhibition also shows some of the historical objects found on the site, and explains how they were used by the monks that used to live in Haughmond Abbey. Refreshments are available, there is a shop, and dogs are welcome on a lead. Due to the nature of the site, disabled access is limited.

Hodnet Hall Gardens (7 miles)
This award-winning garden covers more than 60 acres with flowers, lawns and forest trees. Hodnet Hall Gardens is also particularly noted for its ornamental pools which provide an excellent habitat for wildlife and waterfowl. The gardens are beautiful at any time of year, and always have something to interest the visitor, including the fine display of daffodils in springtime for which the gardens are famous. As spring turns to summer, the later flowering Magnolias, Azaleas, Wisteria and Rhododendrons provide a magnificent display of colour. In the autumn, many trees and shrubs including Birches and Cotoneaster enhance the landscape. With so much to see and enjoy, it's little wonder that Hodnet Hall Gardens won the Christies Historic Houses Association "Garden of the Year" award in 1985, and regularly appears in television programmes.

Shrewsbury Castle and The Shropshire Regimental Museum (13 miles)
A day out at Shrewsbury Castle and the Shropshire Regimental Museum is a must for fans of military history, or indeed anyone who would like to see one of Shropshire's most fascinating and ancient buildings. The castle dates back almost a thousand years, and has seen many changes - from vital strategic fortress in the 11th and 12th centuries, to a ruin during the reign of Elizabeth I. It even played a role in the Civil War. The museum traces the history of four Shropshire Regiments, displaying artefacts including regimental silverware, uniforms, weapons from swords to machine guns, and the medals earned by soldiers serving throughout the world.
