Priory Marina Local Information

Bedford Museum (1 mile)

You can discover the secrets of Bedfordshire's past at the Bedford Museum. Follow the county from it’s prehistoric past to the foundation of the market town of Bedford. The county's traditional industries of lace-making and engineering are explored at the Museum, along with a collection of toys and games of yesteryear. There is a section of the Museum devoted to habitat settings, where you can meet the escapees from Woburn Wildlife Park and discover which fossils you are standing on. The Museum itself is housed in the former Higgins and Sons Brewery which is beside the Great Ouse Embankment in the gardens of Bedford Castle.

Bromham Mill and Gallery (3 miles)

Even before the Domesday Survey in 1086 there was a a mill on the site of Bromham Mill. Before the 1920s, the great wheel was turned by the water of the River Great Ouse. However, in the 1920s steam power was introduced to supplement the water wheel, but unfortunately by then water mill technology was obsolete. The Mill has been renovated and today the mill once again grinds flour much as it used to. There are millers telling the stories and history of the Mill whilst the machinery creaks, groans and splashes away. Also the mill has become a centre where artists and crafts people teach new skills.

Moot Hall (2 miles)

Elstow Moot Hall dates from the late 15th Century, when it was a market house connected to the village fairs. The stalls used during the fairs were stored here, and it was also used as a place to settle the disputes which arose from the fairs. During the 19th Century, the hall's upper room was used as a place of worship and a school. More recently, the Moot Hall was restored by Bedfordshire County Council for use as a museum showing 17th Century English Life and tradition. Near to the Moot Hall is the stump of a cross which marks the site on Elstow Green were the Annual May Fair used to be held. This was the same green that John Bunyan danced and played games of "tip-cat" upon.

Within the ten acres of the Swiss Garden, you can experience a unique and beautiful example of a garden from one of the great periods of English gardening. The Swiss Garden takes you back to the early 19th century, when ornamental gardening and picturesque architecture were first combined. There are many splendid shrubs and rare trees combined with exotic structures such as the breathtaking Fernery and Grotto. At the centre of the garden is the tiny romantic Swiss Cottage. You can purchase light refreshments and full meals at the restaurant, and there is lots of disabled access with wheelchair loans, suitable toilets and easily accessible paths.

The house contains one of the finest private art collections in England, with masterpieces by Van Dyck, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Canaletto and Velasquez and many more.
