Poplar Dock Marina Local Information
City of London Billingsgate Market (1 mile)
Now famous for selling roughly 25,000 tonnes of fish per annum, Billingsgate Market was not originally a specialist fish market. While the market has existed since 1400 by an act of Henry IV, it wasn’t until 1850 that a purpose-built fish market was built. This was a boom time for fish sales and it was so expansive that just 23 years later this market couldn’t cope and was torn down to be replaced with a much larger facility. That building stands to the present day and is now listed. The market is open to the public however, guided tours are only available to students and those connected to the catering / restaurant trade.

Cutty Sark Clipper Ship (2 miles)
Progress on the restoration of Cutty Sark is underway apace once more following the potentially devastating fire of 2007. Luckily, it transpired that only 2% of the ship’s fabric was lost in that blaze. Constructed to be the fastest tea clipper plying the China tea route, Cutty Sark was effectively a ‘souped-up’ version of the clipper “The Tweed”. This was a vessel already owned and run by commissioning client John Willis. Cutty Sark took this design and modified it for increased speed and better handling. While built for the tea routes, it was on the Australian wool routes that Cutty Sark really proved herself the fastest of her time.

Pumphouse Educational Museum (1 mile)
The Pumphouse Educational Museum opened in 1991, housed in the refurbished Rotherhithe Pumphouse building. The Rotherhithe Heritage Museum is to be found here too – on the ground floor. The pumphouse was originally built as part of the system which controlled the water levels in the local dock system. When Surrey Docks closed in 1970, there was a great deal of land made derelict, and much of this is now the Lavender Pond & Nature Park, which also falls under the umbrella of the Pumphouse Educational Museum. Between these facilities there are three floors and over a hectare of fascinating exhibits and features to be seen and enjoyed.
